WOODLAND PARK, NJ - John P. Holland Charter School (JPHCS) marked the first day of the school year Tuesday morning with its Annual Million Father March, “Fathers Making a Difference,” highlighting the vital role of fathers and male role models in students’ lives.

Dozens of fathers, grandfathers, and male mentors gathered outside the school to celebrate and share words of encouragement. The event is part of a national initiative that encourages men to take an active role in their children’s education, beginning on the first day of school and continuing throughout the year.

Sen. Benjie Wimberly also addressed the crowd, underscoring the need for consistent involvement. “Be accessible,” Wimberly told the group. “It matters that our children have someone they can go to, regardless of the situation.”

Mayor André Sayegh joined families for the march and praised the commitment of those in attendance. “I’m glad to be a part of the same family, a family of fathers,” Sayegh said. “We need to step up to the plate for our children.”

School leaders echoed the message. Dr. Keonté, principal of grades 3–8 at JPHCS, said the event is designed to shine a light on fathers who often go unrecognized. “Fathers who show up often get overlooked,” Keonté said. “We want to recognize you and give you the praise and appreciation you deserve for all that you do to make a difference.”
